I have chosen " Barn Study " as my first painting lesson because it
utilizes both color wash and some detail techniques.
I begin with a simple pencil sketch of
the main elements. I next add a light
wash of YELLOW OCHRE over the
entire paper because I want the scene
to have a bright summer feel.

Once this wash has dried I rewet the
entire sky area and add a light wash of
ULTRAMARINE BLUE to the top and
bottom of the sky and allow this to
spread on its own. Don't try to control it.
Just let the colors do their thing.

I  also add the same blue to the
shadowed side of the barn.
Next I add a wash of SEPIA to the entire barn using a
deeper value on the shadow side. Do not paint over any
missing boards that allow the sky to show through.
I always exaggerate the
shadow areas to create
more drama. To do this I
add a second wash of
ULTRAMARINE BLUE to
the shadow side of barn.
Remember not to paint the
missing boards.
It is now time to lay in the foreground. Begin
by wetting the entire grassy area. Lay in lots
of paint into this wet area alternating between
SAP GREEN and YELLOW OCHRE.

Let the colors mix and bleed together on the
paper.
HINT: Don't try to
paint in every
single board. You
will define the
boards at a later
stage.
Back to the shadows. Using a mix of SEPIA and
ULTRAMARINE I begin to paint the separate
barn boards. Vary the mix used on each board.  I
shadow the grass areas beside the barn entry
ramp and behind the barn with a mix of
ULTRAMARINE and SAP GREEN.

Apply a wash of DAVIES GREY to barn roof.
I add depth to the painting by first
adding an indication of a tree line on
the horizon. I use a thin wash of
ULTRAMARINE and SEPIA. Make
sure to include this in the spaces
where you can see through th barn.
Then add the closer line of trees and
fence using SEPIA.

Use a thin SEPIA to paint the boards
on the front of the barn. Again, don't
worry about painting every board.

At this point I decided the scene
needed something in the foreground
so I sketched in the fence posts.
This is where the fun
begins. Using a fine brush
and SEPIA you can now
start to define the barn
boards. Paint in the small
lines between the boards
and any gaps where
boards are missing.

Use the same paint along
the eaves of the roof.

No self respecting barn
should be caught without a
rusted roof. I Use BURNT
SEINNA to create this look.
We're almost home now. Using
SEPIA I add the broken fence
beside the barn and the doorway
in the foundation. I'm not quite
happy with the single tree in the
background so I give it some
company by adding several
smaller trees.

The foreground fence posts are
Painted with YELLOW OCHRE
and SEPIA keeping the darker
tones on the shadow side.

Finally, I paint the row of cedars on
the right side of the barn.
